John Watt Memorial Fun Walk/Run

Your Guide to the John Watt Memorial Fun Walk/Run

Where: The majestic land of Sunriver Village, right in front of the legendary Hot Lava Bakery
When: Thursday, July 17th, 7:00 AM (yes, that’s in the morning… sorry, night owls)
What to Bring: Running shoes, comfy gear, and your A-game (or your coffee-craving energy, both are fine)

The Mission (Should You Choose to Accept It):

Gather your pack, lace your laces, and prepare for the annual John Watt Memorial Fun Walk/Run — a Family 5K so iconic, even your Fitbit will be like, “Whoa, calm down, hero.”

Starting point? Hot Lava Bakery.

Middle point? You will run out to the Marina-ish and back.

Finishing reward? Also Hot Lava Bakery — because what is life without a little circular symmetry and a Bigfoot donut the size of a toddler?

Pro tip: Those who walk, jog, skip, or gallop in style may or may not receive unsolicited high-fives and eternal glory from family members.

 Route Overview:

  • Distance: 5K (Translation: you can totally do this)

  • Obstacles: Your own enthusiasm and possibly some chipmunks

  • Terrain: Paved paths and pure joy

  • Vibe: Somewhere between “Rocky montage” and “We’re just here for the pastries”

The Heart of the Run: A Tribute to John Watt

This isn’t just any 5K.
The John Watt Memorial Run was created to honor the life and legacy of John Watt — beloved son of Faye and Byron Watt, and proud father to Dave and Don Watt.

John was more than just a runner. He was a connector, a motivator, and a true embodiment of what it means to live fully and run freely. He loved the running community, and he found purpose in health, movement, and meaningful moments.

John was chasing his dream of qualifying for the Boston Marathon when he tragically passed away less than half a mile from the finish line of the Livermore Marathon at just 42 years old.

This run is a celebration of his spirit — a chance to move together as a family, to remember John’s determination and heart, and to recognize the lives we live and the connections we cherish.

 Post-Run Festivities:

  • Coffee: Yes.

  • Bigfoot donuts: Absolutely.

  • Bragging rights: Infinite.

  • Photos: Mandatory awkward family selfies encouraged.

 Final Tips from the Field:

  • Arrive a little early to stretch and absorb the pre-run buzz (also: donuts smell better when you’re not running late)

  • Hydrate like you’re about to audition for a Gatorade commercial

  • Hug your people — this is what it’s all about

  • Wear something fun if the spirit moves you (costumes, funky socks, headbands of power)

See you at sunrise, team Watt.
Because there’s no better way to honor John, celebrate each other, and kick off a reunion than by moving forward—together.
