Down to the River!
Event Description
Halloween plans? Ours involve a river, a bottle of wine, and a whole lot of fall color.
Join us at Hardware Hills Family Winery on Saturday, October 31, from 12 to 4:30 p.m. for something a little different.
Pick up a bottle of wine in our tasting room, take a short hike down to the historic Hardware River, and spend the afternoon by the water with your chair, your glass, and the best of Virginia's fall foliage.
It's our final celebration of Virginia Wine Month, and we can't think of a better way to wrap it up.
How It Works:
RSVP (free, but required). Reserve your spot so we know you're coming.
- Check in at the tasting room. Arrive anytime between 12 and 3 p.m. and choose a bottle of Hardware Hills wine to take with you.
- Hike down to the river. It's about a 15-minute walk from the tasting room.
- Settle in and stay a while. Set up your chair by the water, pour a glass, and enjoy the scenery. Additional wines will be available at the river.
- Hike back up when you're ready. Take your time. The afternoon is yours. Hikes back up need to start by 4:30 p.m. as we close at 5 p.m.
- For your convenience, you may order a charcuterie box and it will be waiting for you at the river when you arrive. Boxes are $30 and should be pre-ordered with your RSVP.
About the Hike
- Difficulty: Moderate (small section of steeper slope -- the majority of the hike are gentle paths in the woods)
- Distance/time: About 1/4 mile or 15 minutes each way from the tasting room
- Elevation: A 300-foot decline on the way down, which means a 300-foot climb on the way back up. Give yourself a little extra time for the return trip.
- Footwear: Smart hiking shoes or sturdy closed-toe shoes are strongly recommended. The trail is uneven, so please leave the sandals and heels at home.
What to Bring
- Your own folding chair (lightweight or backpack-style is easiest to carry)
- Layers and weather-appropriate clothing. Dress for the day, and remember it's cooler by the water
- A small backpack or tote bag for your chair, bottle, and anything else you want along. Cups for your wine will be at the river, but feel free to bring your own drinkware (non-glass please).
- Water to stay hydrated
- Your ID, since we'll be checking
Good to Know
- 21+ only. Valid ID required. No exceptions.
- No dogs, please. This not applies to service animals as required by law.
- Rain cancels the event. If the forecast looks wet, we'll announce cancellations by Friday, October 30th, so please check before you head out.
- Please pack out what you pack in. Help us keep the river as beautiful as we found it.
- There is minimal cell service at the river, so plan to blissfully disconnect. Our team will have walkie talkies for emergencies.
- There are no restrooms at the river. Restrooms are at the tasting room.

Not at this river hike. Pets are welcome at the tasting room anytime!
Bring smart shoes, appropriate clothing, and a love of wine! You may bring outside food to enjoy at the river, but outside alcohol is strictly prohibited by ABC law. DEFINITELY bring chairs you can hike to the river with and a water bottle is a good idea. We also suggest a small backpack for any other items you need to carry.
A charcuterie box is available to arrange to have waiting for you at the river. All wine purchases may be made at the tasting room or at the river as well. Final tabs are due upon departure.
The river is in the woods (take that as you may). The nearest restroom is the tasting room.
