Milestone 3: The Current Record
The men’s mile world record remains held by Moroccan legend Hicham El Guerrouj, who set a blistering mark of 3:43.13 at Rome’s Stadio Olimpico in 1999. This astonishing record still stands today as the fastest officially timed mile outdoors, one of the longest lasting records in track and field.
However, the record in indoor competition was set more recenlty. The Norwegian star Jakob Ingebrigtsen has established a new benchmark, clocking 3:45.14 in Liévin, France, in February 2025—breaking the previous indoor record by Yared Nuguse.
On the women’s side, the world record is held by Kenyan middle-distance superstar Faith Kipyegon, who ran 4:07.64 at the Diamond League in Monaco on July 21, 2023
In summary:
Men’s outdoor mile WR: 3:43.13 by Hicham El Guerrouj (1999)
Men’s indoor mile WR: 3:45.14 by Jakob Ingebrigtsen (2025)
Women’s outdoor mile WR: 4:07.64 by Faith Kipyegon (2023)
These records reflect both enduring excellence and evolving possibilities, highlighting the relentless progress and ambition in middle-distance running.
