Classical Tradition, Reimagined

 

Beethovenian Collective is pleased to present pianists Kelvin Tang and Yang Gao in an afternoon of refined piano artistry, performed in the gracious setting of the Willow Bay House.

 

Doors open at 3:30 PM · Recital begins at 4:00 PM

About the Artists

Kelvin Tang is an accomplished pianist and composer who began publishing his own works in 2023. His notable compositions include the collaborative Echoes of Home for Violin and Piano, as well as the piano solo work Nocturne and Piano Suite No. 2.In 2021, Kelvin won the prestigious Beethoven Takács Piano Competition at Oberlin Conservatory, marking a significant achievement in his musical journey. In 2025, he was a prizewinner at the Yale Gordon Piano Competition at the Peabody Institute of Music, earning the opportunity to perform Rachmaninoff's Piano Concerto No. 3 with the Peabody Symphony Orchestra in fall 2026.

He has participated in numerous masterclasses with esteemed musicians including Dang Thai Son, Stanislav Ioudenitch, Leslie Howard, Richard Goode, Nicholas Namoradze, and Robert Levin, gaining invaluable insights from each experience.

Kelvin has been admitted to the Doctor of Musical Arts program at the Peabody Institute. He earned his Master of Music at Peabody under HieYon Choi and his Bachelor of Music at Oberlin Conservatory under Alvin Chow. He also participated in the Junior Piano Program at the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts, studying under Hui Ling. Kelvin is the inaugural recipient of the Beethovenian Fellowship.

Chinese-born pianist Yang Gao is praised for performances that blend emotional depth with refined musical insight, described as playing "with exuberance, graced with a sensitive touch and eloquent articulations." He is First Prize winner of the Harrison Winter Concerto Competition and Silver Medalist at the Wideman International Piano Competition, and has been invited to compete at the Chopin International Piano Competition in Warsaw and the Leeds International Piano
Competition, among others.

Yang has been featured on WQXR Classical Music Radio and appeared in Portland Piano International's Rising Star Series, with performances at Weill Recital Hall at Carnegie Hall and as soloist with the Camerata NY Orchestra and the Peabody Concert Orchestra. He is a fellowship recipient of both the Gilmore Piano Festival
and the Bowdoin International Music Festival.

Currently pursuing his Doctor of Musical Arts at the Peabody Institute under HieYon Choi, Yang also teaches piano minor and chamber music at Johns Hopkins
University. His previous teachers include Peabody alumnus Awadagin Pratt and the legendary pianist Vladimir Feltsman. Yang is a Beethovenian Collective Artist and Co-Director of newly established Beethovenian Junior Piano Competition.
