Event Description
Join us for our third lecture of 2026 and celebrate National Bee Day at the Delaware Botanic Gardens.
We welcome local beekeeper, Patrick Carey from Carey Apiary to share his knowledge on these busy pollinators that make our life sweeter.
Lecture title: BEES: The Buzz about Beekeeping
Lecture description: The talk on national bee day will encompass the basic anatomy of honey bee's and their contribution to our food web. Patrick will discuss the history of Beekeeping and the plights currently facing the industry, as well as make suggestions to better protect the species. An "observation hive" will be onsite so you can observe bees at work, and he will also discuss and show you many tools of the beekeeping field.
The talk will last approximately one hour, and there will be a Q&A period after.
The lecture begins at 10 AM, and will be held at the Annette Pennoni Meadow Pavilion.
The Gardens open at 9 AM, so come out early and take a stroll or a relaxing sit
About the speaker: Carey Apiary was born from Patrick Carey’s passion for bees and his discovery of a thriving local honey market. Patrick pursued his Master Beekeeper certification through the University of Florida to turn his passion into a professional, sustainable apiary.
Located on 5 acres of rehabilitated farmland in Frankford, Delaware, Carey Apiary is proud to be Sussex County’s premier honey farm, providing raw, local honey to fill the gap in the regional market.
In addition to honey production, Carey Apiary specializes in eco-friendly honey bee removals, as well as non-honey bee stinging insect removals. Through our partnership with HollisterStier Allergy Laboratory, some removals contribute to venom extraction for life-saving allergy research and treatments.
His apiary is located just a few minutes away from the Gardens.
