Event Description
דער גולם
Der Goylem: a Yiddish Puppet Spectacle
Saturday 5/2/26 6-7:30pm
What would you do…
… if you could summon a golem to fight the empire?
…if you were a golem, trying to survive for the long haul?
The old world is dying, and the new world struggles to be born: now is the time of golems.
Der Goylem will bring us together for some much-needed joy, grief, play, rebellion, celebration, and participatory art. This show will marry Yiddish puppetry with large-scale protest puppet theater. Together we will honor our ancestors and imagine Olam Ha-bo, the world to come. It features both Yiddish and English, as well as Klezmer musical accompaniment. Der Goylem is by and for the trans and queer Jews of the East Bay, and anyone is warmly welcome to attend.
Expect debauchery, degeneracy, and garlic.
Location
This event is outdoors, among the redwood giants of Joaquin Miller Park. It will be at the Fernwood Picnic Area. We recommend parking by the Joaquin Miller Community Center and walking down to the site, about a quarter mile from the road. There will be signs posted helping you find your way. Please carpool if you can. The 31 bus line also runs very close to this part of the park!
Accessibility
Please wear a mask to this event and stay home if you're feeling sick. We'll have a limited number of masks available at the show.
It's around a quarter mile on a wide gravel or dirt path down to the site. We may be able to offer drive-up access to those with limited mobility; reach out to Anshl truelizardqueen(at)gmail.com to discuss any access needs.
We will have an accessible seating area with camping chairs–please let us know if you'll need one so we can reserve it in advance.
What to Bring
Comfortable shoes and water. There are wooden picnic benches at the site, but bringing camping chairs, blankets, etc (and extras) is encouraged! Feel free to bring snacks and food to share.
Free challah will be served!
This event is presented with incredible support from KlezCalifornia’s Yiddish Culture Fund!
