HPRS Clinics: Trail Runner Navigation
This is a clinic designed for trail runners to learn the skills necessary to utilize a map and compass, online mapping softwares, and GPS devices.
This is a series of 4 classes that will be taught virtually via ZOOM.
Class 1: A Sense of Direction, Maps 101, Terrain Association
Class 2: The Compass, Understanding Declination, Altimeters, Bearings
Class 3: Using Map & Compass Together, Route Planning, Q&A
Class 4: Using Digital Resources to Create Routes, GPX, Online Mapping Software (COTrex, CalTopo, GAIA GPS)
OPTIONAL: Take the final exam and final practicum (in the field) to earn your HPRS Navigation Merit Badge!
Classes will be held on Tuesday Nights from 7-9pm Mountain Time. Each class will be recorded and uploaded to YouTube for those who cannot attend live, or for those who wish to review the materials.
These classes are designed to help trail runners:
• Develop a sense of direction
• Read Maps and Use Compasses
• Plan Routes Over Any Terrain
We will then host an optional in-person event where we put our new skills to use, and test our understanding of knowledge shared.
