"Here, But Not Here": Strategies For Navigating a Loved One's Psychological Absence

Tue June 10, 2025 Live, Remote via Zoom 9:30am - 12:30pm EST
Newville, PA 17241 US

Workshop Information

Description:

Persons with traumatic brain injuries, dementia, chronic physical illnesses, addiction, or serious mental health conditions disappear psychologically while remaining physically present in the lives of others. Family members, caregivers, and friends experience psychological ambiguous loss in managing the duality of a loved one’s presence and absence. Enduring the confusion, pain, and grief of witnessing a loved one “slip away” daily lends to hopelessness, depression, anxiety, and relationship disconnections. This engaging, case-based workshop discusses best practice strategies and practical methods of empowering individuals navigating psychological ambiguous loss.

Learning Objectives:

1. Define and describe psychological ambiguous loss.

2. Discuss best practice guidelines in empowering persons of the psychologically absent.

3. Apply the guidelines to practice using a case study.
