                       THE PROGRAM

Enjoy a bit of musical time travel with these two accomplished and acclaimed musicians: The spectacular 60–70 minute performance will begin with Aaron Copland’s Duo for flute and piano, from 1971, followed by Ian Clarke’s Orange Dawn (1991) and Stacy Garrop’s à La Kujala (premiered one year ago), then Phoebe Pylant’s Marmoris (2021), and will wrap with Erwin Schulhoff’s 1928 masterpiece, Sonata for Flute and Piano.
                      THE PERFORMERS
Amy Likar, noted for her “...dazzling…and winning tonal beauty and eloquence,” (Joshua Kosman, SF Chronicle), is an active freelancer and chamber musician based in the San Francisco Bay Area. Drawing on Alexander Technique, Body Mapping, and exercise science, she is dedicated to helping musicians find the freedom to be fully themselves. Career highlights include the premiere of Martin Rokeach’s Concerto for Piccolo and Orchestra and premieres of works by Valerie Coleman, Michael Stephens, Donald Sloan, and Daniel Felsenfeld. Likar has served on the faculty at Saint Mary’s College of California and is a member of the Oakland Symphony. She is a Verne Q. Powell Performing Artist and the author of The Breathing Book for Flute and co-author of Mindful Flute Etudes. She holds degrees from Kent State University (BM and BMEd) and the Ohio State University (MM and DMA).
Lino Rivera is a concert pianist and music educator. Born in the Philippines, Lino is known for engaging audiences by bringing the pieces he plays to life—sharing his knowledge, interacting with listeners, and breaking down the formality of the concert experience. Lino has performed as a solo recitalist, concerto soloist, chamber musician, and accompanist on three continents. Lino holds a Bachelor of Music degree in piano performance from the University of Santo Tomas, a master’s from the University of Hawaii, and a doctorate from the University of Maryland. He currently serves as a music professor in the Performing Arts Department at Saint Mary’s College of California, while maintaining an active concert schedule domestically and internationally.
                      Program Notes
Ian Clarke’s work Orange Dawn, is supposed to evoke flamingos in Kenya.
Stacy Garrop’s à La Kujala is brand new and just premiered last October in Chicago. It is in memory and tribute to Walfrid Kujala, former piccoloist in the Chicago Symphony. It’s in three movements and each pays homage to Wally in a different way. The first movement is all motives from his book called Vade Mecum, which is essentially a handbook on everything flute. The second movement is riffs on some famous piccolo orchestral excerpts, and the third movement is the Finnish Hymn Päivä vain ja hetki kerrallansa, or With Each Passing Moment.
The Schulhoff Sonata was written in 1927 and he himself called it “printed kitsch, but skillfully made.” He is a Czech composer who studied under Dvořák but was influenced by Schoenberg. So this sonata is an eclectic mix of jazz, Dadaism, Impressionism and folkloric melodies!
