The Moorestown Music Collective is beyond excited to welcome Rock & Roll Hall of Fame member Michael Hampton (aka KIDD FUNKADELIC) with his band Punkadelic (featuring Chuck Treece, and with Philip Smith) to the Music On Main concert series on Friday night, March 22, 2024. They will be playing the classic album Maggot Brain and other hits! This is sure to be a special night!!!

About Punkadelic

Punkadelic is a collaboration between legendary funk icon Michael Hampton (Parliament Funkadelic), longtime punk rocker Chuck Treece (Bad Brains, McRad), and guitar prodigy Philip Smith (founder of Goldfinch Guitars). They use their decades of music experience to blend punk and funk into an energetic prog soup.

About Michael Hampton

Michael Hampton is a member of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, inducted in 1997 with fifteen other members of Parliament-Funkadelic. He was born in Cleveland, Ohio, and started his professional career when he was recruited as a seventeen-year-old guitar prodigy by the band Funkadelic, which found itself in need of a lead guitarist after original guitarist Eddie Hazel left the band. Hampton impressed Funkadelic's George Clinton by performing a note-for-note rendition of Hazel's ten-minute solo "Maggot Brain". Hampton made his debut with the band's album Let's Take It to the Stage in 1975, which is dominated by his guitar. Hampton's playing included fuzzy, Hendrix-inspired licks and wailing harmonics. Due to his young age, Hampton was nicknamed "Kidd Funkadelic".

Hampton became a fixture in Funkadelic, and he continued his role as lead guitarist even during Hazel's sporadic returns to the band. Hampton's performances of "Maggot Brain" — which had become more improvised – became regular features of live Parliament-Funkadelic shows, and the song became his signature concert performance. The bonus-EP of Funkadelic's One Nation Under a Groove (1978) included a live version of the song featuring Hampton. One of his most celebrated performances is the lead guitar solo on the Funkadelic hit single "(Not Just) Knee Deep" from 1979, as well the title track to the Brides of Funkenstein's second album Never Buy Texas From A Cowboy.

In 1993, Hampton performed on the album Under the 6 with Slave Master. Hampton continued to perform on albums released under Clinton's name, which featured many other P-Funk mainstays as well, and he became a member of the P-Funk All-Stars. In 1998, he released his first solo album entitled Heavy Metal Funkason through the P-Vine label in Japan.

In 2022, Hampton joined Chuck Treece to form the funk/punk fusion group Punkadelic. With Hampton on guitar and Treece on bass and drums, Punkadelic performed both original music and Funkadelic covers in Philidelphia, Mexico, and live on the radio at WOCM Ocean 98 in Ocean City, Maryland. Punkadelic released 2 singles and an original EP titled Collective Consciousness in 2023.

About Chuck Treece

Chuck Treece is a session musician and professional skateboarder from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. In 1984, he became famous for being the first African-American skateboarder to be featured on the cover of Thrasher magazine. His musical credits include starting the 1980s skate punk band McRad, remixing songs for Amy Grant and Sting, playing the bass line on "The River of Dreams" by Billy Joel, filling in on drums at a Pearl Jam concert, and touring with Urge Overkill, Underdog and Bad Brains. In 2010, he was awarded a Pew Fellowships in the Arts. Chuck currently plays bass in a thrash metal band called ACTiVATE. Treece drummed on the album, Mass by Canadian ska band, Bedouin Soundclash. 

Starting in 2001, Treece was also a founding member of Philadelphia punk band Stiffed. The band helped launch the chart-topping solo career of Stiffed's vocalist Santi White under the stage name of Santigold, who credits Treece as "the person that got me to sing".

Treece also joined producer Chris DiBeneditto at Philadelphonic Studios to record the drum tracks for The Movement's 2008 rock/reggae album Set Sail. After recording the album, fellow McRad band members Gary Jackson and Jason Schmidt took on the role as drummer and bassist for The Movement. Treece continues to skate at FDR Skatepark in Philadelphia and works closely with legendary producer Joe "The Butcher" Nicolo. In 2010 Treece joined Philly/NYC punk band Plastic Eaters as their resident drummer. In 2014 Treece continued his Long time musical connection with legendary singer [HR] of the Bad Brains writing and recording new tracks in the studio and performing live shows on Drums with HR and Philly Dub/ Reggae outfit I Yahn I Arkestra notably featuring Treece's childhood Musical mentor, the original Dub Warrior Timi Tanzania. In January 2016 Treece played second guitar in the DC hardcore group Scream at the Black Cat in Washington DC for a benefit show for area musician Doc Night.
