Workshop Details:

Description:

U.S. Census Bureau estimates by 2034 persons over the age of 65 will outnumber those under 18 in the United States. The nation’s rapidly expanding aging population heightens the potential that social workers in diverse settings will encounter bereaved older adults. This interactive and case-based workshop discusses older persons’ death-related losses and unique bereavement overload experiences. Drawing on the dual process model, the knowledge and skill advancement opportunity will include best practice strategies and practical methods for empowering bereaved adults.

Learning Objectives:

1. Explain four death-related losses specific to older adults.

2. Identify two biopsychosocial or spiritual characteristics of each type of death-related

    loss.

3. Construct a case study focusing on an older adult’s bereavement experience.

4.  Demonstrate application of the dual process model to practice.
