The Problem:
The misuse of and addiction to opioids is a serious crisis affecting public health and social and economic welfare. The CDC estimates that opioid misuse costs $78.5 billion a year in the U.S. In 2019, 460 people in Seminole County overdosed on opioids; 83 of them died. In 2020, according to the Florida Department of Health, the state has experienced a nearly 50% increase in opioid-related deaths.
The Initiative:
AdventHealth, the Seminole County Sheriff’s Office, Seminole County EMS/Fire Rescue, and the Board of County Commissioners have launched a unique partnership to combat the opioid epidemic. A key component to this is a new addictions recovery center called the AdventHealth Hope & Healing Center whose purpose is to reduce overdoses and deaths within our community. The center will house up to 30 men and 8 women and will provide up to 30 days of overnight care.
The Need:
All programs will be available regardless of a person’s ability to pay for the services. As the facility undergoes a new build and major renovation, it needs new IT systems and security, new beds, kitchen appliances, and common area furniture. In addition to clinical services, residents will need meals, hygiene items, clothing, medications, indoor and outdoor activities, clinical workbooks, and outside services that will prepare them to return to their life upon completion of the program.
How you can help:
The Center has a yearly budget of approximately $1.8 million that needs to get funded. To sustain the center and its innovative programs, Leadership Seminole Classes 29 and 30 are creating awareness and raising funds to assist in running and maintaining the facility.
