More about Martinus Evans:
In 2012, Martinus Evans was a 360-pound former football player with a bachelor’s degree in exercise science working at Men’s Wearhouse.
During the evaluation for his persistent hip pain, his doctor dropped a bomb: “Mr. Evans, you’re fat. You can either lose weight or die.” But Martinus defiantly created a third option – taking his life into his own hands and proving his doctor, and everyone who ever doubted him,
wrong by running a marathon.
Since then, Martinus has completed 8 marathons, including Boston, New York, and Berlin, and more than one hundred other long-distance races. He was the first plus-sized ambassador for Adidas and has been on the cover of Runner’s World. Using his experience, Martinus challenges the conventional narrative of what a runner looks like in his new book, Slow AF Run Club: The Ultimate Guide for Anyone Who Wants to Run (Avery, June 8, 2023).
A body-liberation manifesto and guide to running all in one, Slow AF Run Club works to help empower people to embrace the body they have right now, lace up their shoes, and MOVE. Martinus is the example and role model, doing everything he tells us about in the book. He created the Slow AF Run Club to get people running, and this book is only an extension of the meaningful work he’s already doing. Martinus makes the case that everyone is a runner. As long as your legs are moving faster than when you’re walking, you are running. He rids audiences of preconceived notions of what a runner should look like, and provides plans and even journaling prompts that help the most hesitant runner take more confident steps out the door.
