Virginia Tichenor’s Ragtime Quartet!

This quartet features ragtime pianist Virginia Tichenor with a stellar line-up of musicians to perform a program of ragtime and traditional jazz music for your listening pleasure. The quartet also includes Ryan Calloway on clarinet, banjo and vocals, Marty Eggers on tuba, and Robert Young on cornet.
Virginia Tichenor is an Oakland-based ragtime and traditional jazz pianist. Originally from St. Louis, Missouri, she is the daughter of the late Trebor Tichenor, a noted scholar, pianist and collector of ragtime music. Virginia plays solo piano locally in the Bay Area and is also a traditional jazz pianist, working currently with her husband, Marty Eggers, also with the Zenith Jazz Band, the Silver Bell Jazz Band, and the Barrelhouse Jazz Band. Bay Area performances include regular monthly engagements from Larkspur to Los Gatos. Virginia performed regularly on piano at Pier 23 in San Francisco for 20 years. Besides playing piano, she also plays drums! Virginia is one of the few women playing ragtime in the country. Recent festival appearances include the annual Scott Joplin Ragtime Festival in Sedalia, Missouri, and the West Coast Ragtime Festival in Sacramento, California.
Ryan Calloway is a multifaceted artist residing in Oakland with a notable reputation in the fields of design, music, and dance. As a world-renowned Lindy Hop dancer and instructor, he has taught and performed across the United States, as well as in Vienna, Budapest, Cape Town, Singapore, and Vancouver. Ryan is also an accomplished musician, playing the clarinet, saxophone, and banjo with a focus on Ragtime, early jazz, and blues. He has graced stages around the world and leads two acclaimed bands in the Bay Area.
Marty Eggers’ music career began in Sacramento, California, where as a teenager he helped found the Sacramento Ragtime Society in 1982. Marty plays piano, string bass and tuba. He lives in Oakland with his wife, pianist and drummer Virginia Tichenor. They perform regularly and irregularly around the San Francisco Bay Area and beyond, including monthly at the American Legion in Larkspur. Lately, Marty has been active locally with Bob Schulz’s Barbary Coast Jazz Band, Gaucho and the Silver Bell Jazz Band.
Robert Young is a true renaissance man of the Bay Area Traditional Jazz scene. He plays Cornet, and all the saxophones including bass saxophone, and even plays church organ in addition to being a wonderful vocalist. Robert learned to play New Orleans Jazz with New Orleans musicians in Los Angeles early on in his career. He is a stalwart member of ragtime, 20’s, New Orleans, and Swing bands in the Bay Area.
