What is a Performed Stage Reading?
A staged reading of a play is when actors sit around a table, or stand in front of podiums and read the play to the audience. This is done typically with original material, or with plays that a theater may want to present more quickly without the need of a full set and blocking for the actors. It also works well with material which benefits from the reading of the stage directions by a narrator.
Our Performed Stage Reading uses those elements, especially the use of the narrator. However, the actors will perform the roles of the characters and not be limited by needing to read the scripts. The actors are fully memorized giving them greater freedom to dive into the life of the story. This gives the audience a greater sense of the overall story.
Staged readings are often presented with a talk-back with the actors and creative team to give the audience the ability to ask questions and discuss the play. Fifth Planet will include a 30-minute talk-back immediately following the play.
Show Description
SUMMARY
Fifth Planet, which Auburn wrote during his Julliard residency, is a one-act play that charts the bumpy relationship of two astronomers, one amateur and one professional, over the course of a year. The play has several scenes, some of them very short. Each scene takes place on a different night on the same hilltop.
FORMAT
Fifth Planet is a one-act play, and its run time is approximately 60 minutes with no intermission. It is presented as a performed stage reading, and will include a 30 minute talk-back discussion afterwards with the actors.
RATING
The play contains use of colorful dialogue and mature themes. Parental guidance is suggested.
