King & Queen Competition

King & Queen Competition

SFTC's King & Queen competition is designed with 3 primary goals:

1) Provide a season-long competition for members that is standardized for distance and age;
2) Recognize those races in our area which meet or exceed basic criteria;
3) Encourage members to help & support club operations and engagements through volunteering.

K&Q Basic Info

  • Run six (6) K & Q races that total at least 25 miles, and

  • Work club events to obtain 5 volunteer service points.

  • Virtual races do not count for K & Q.

  • Races may be added during the competition year at the discretion of the board.  Races may also cancel throughout the year.

Scoring

All races are age-graded and 10K-normalized using factors published by World Masters Athletics (formerly World Association of Veteran Athletes). Your score is the average age-graded time of your best 6 races which total at least 25 miles. If your 6 fastest races are less than 25 miles, then your other longer K&Q races will be substituted in place of shorter races until your 6 scored races total at least 25 miles.

Further details on how K&Q scoring is done can be found in Earl Brown's article: How King and Queen Race Results are Calculated.

Awards

Awards are presented at the annual SFTC Awards Banquet.

2 special awards (Mr. and Ms. Mileage) will be given to the runners who log the most K&Q race mileage over the season.

Male/female awards will be given to the top 3 overall. There will be no masters or grandmasters awards.

There will also be 3-deep male/female age group awards, (15-19, 20-24, 25-29, 30-34, 35-39, 40-44, 45-49, 50-54, 55-59, 60-64, 65-69, 70-74, 75- 80, 85 & up).

Age groupings are based on a runner's age as of December 31 for the competition year.

Race Requirements

To qualify as a King & Queen race...

  • The course must be USATF-certified and record-eligible per USATF Competition Rules. Any modification to the course must either be approved by the SFTC board or re-certified by USATF. The only exception to this rule is for trail races where a course is not deemed to be certifiable by USATF. However, reasonable efforts must be made by trail race organizers to determine the course length as accurately as possible.

  • New requests by race directors or organizers for inclusion of their race in the K&Q Competition should be submitted to the SFTC Board prior to the start of a competition year. The deadline for submissions is the November board meeting. No race additions to a competition year shall be made after this date.

  • SFTC members can receive volunteer service points for helping out at all K&Q races and not just those that SFTC own or are hired to manage. In order for these SFTC members to be recognized for their volunteering effort, the race organizers must submit a list of SFTC members volunteering at the event to the SFTC Volunteer Coordinator within one (1) week after the race.

  • Results must be submitted for publication on the SFTC website to the SFTC webmaster within one (1) week after race, though preferably within 48 hours. All results must be via electronic means (no hard copy). Format requirements for results can be found on the Sending Results to SFTC page.

  • Race must provide SFTC with both overall and complete age-group results

  • Race must be posted on the SFTC website 3 months prior to race date

  • Race must be open to both genders

  • Race awards must offer overall, masters, and grandmasters categories

  • Race awards age groups should span at least from 19 yrs to 70 yrs in 5yr or 10yr age groups (board recommends 5yr)

  • Race awards age groups should be offered at least 3 deep

  • Course conditions must be safe for runners

  • The SFTC board reserves the right to remove K&Q status if a race does not meet any of these basic criteria for a quality race>

  • Race must be timed with at least 2 timing devices, providing a primary and backup set of finish times

  • It must be a second year race or older

  • The race must offer at least $1.00 pre-registration discount to SFTC members

  • Any exception to these rules must be submitted to the SFTC Board for approval
