Information
Each spring, we lead a free walk with a ~1-1.5 mile route that includes ~2-4 stops where we hear from a guest speaker. We start or end near public transit and usually end at a place where people can mingle or have a drink if they’d like to continue conversations. Since this is a point-to-point walk, we encourage you to use public transportation, walk, or bike to the start so that it is easy for you to head out afterwards. This walk is in honor of Bob Sloane. Bob was a co-founder of WalkBoston and passed away in May 2021. He was a true pioneer in walking advocacy and a pillar of our organization, and we honor his legacy by hosting a walk each year in his name. Updates will be available on our website & sent to all registered attendees before the event.
Join residents, local officials, and advocates on Tuesday, May 5, at 5:30 PM for an informal stroll through the heart of our neighborhood. Starting at Veterans’ Memorial Park, we will observe and reimagine a more walkable, accessible Nubian Square together. Whether you are a lifelong resident or a local business owner, your voice is essential to moving our community forward.
For nearly a decade, Black Market has been more than a storefront—it has been a cultural anchor in Nubian Square. This 1,720-square-foot gallery serves as a vital platform for hundreds of Black artists and entrepreneurs, many of whom have been historically excluded from traditional retail spaces. As gentrification continues to reshape Roxbury, Black Market is now fighting for its Right to Remain. With their option to purchase the building nearing expiration, securing ownership is critical to preserving this important community space and preventing displacement. Every dollar raised through this walk will go directly toward helping Black Market purchase, protect, and sustain their home for years to come.
This event is made possible by the generous support of the Grimes King Foundation. Their funding allows WalkMassachusetts to continue vital community engagement across Roxbury, Dorchester, and Mattapan—specifically supporting the safety, health, and independence of elderly African American women in Boston.
