Description:
Practitioners across practice settings increasingly encounter persons of diverse ethnic backgrounds navigating life-limiting or terminal conditions. Culturally competent practice warrants that practitioners hold an understanding of ethnically diverse end-of-life and death-related matters and distinct awareness of best practices in communication. This engaging, professional development self-study course examines the beliefs and practices of African Americans, Hispanic Americans, Asian Americans, and Native Americans. These populations from the basis of case study analyses focusing on applying the new knowledge to practitioner-patient/family interactions.
Learning Objectives:
1. Describe the death-related beliefs of the four prominent ethnically diverse populations.
2. Compare and contrast the death-related practices of the four populations.
3. Summarize best practices in communication.
4. Analyze case studies of ethnically diverse patients navigating the end-of-life
and bereavement.
