John Scherff – Extra 300L
John Scherff – Precision Aerobatics & Flight Mastery
With over 31,000 cockpit hours to his name, John Scherff hasn't just spent a career in the air—he has lived there. That is the equivalent of more than three and a half continuous years off the ground, commanding everything from single-engine trainers to massive widebody international airliners.
John’s passion ignited in 1979 when he took his first flying lessons at Pryor Field near Huntsville, Alabama. Driven by relentless dedication, he quickly earned his Certified Flight Instructor rating, hauled nighttime freight, and ferried aircraft nationwide before breaking into the airline industry in 1984 at just 21. Over a dynamic four-decade airline career spanning 11 airlines—including three foreign carriers—John now commands the skies as an instructor and Check Airman on the legendary Boeing 777 for a major airline.
Aviation also gave John the greatest chapter of his life: he met his wife, Kimberly, while sharing a cabin at 30,000 feet. A professional flight attendant for nearly two decades, Kimberly shared his love for the skies, and the two were married shortly after in 1986. Together, they’ve built a lifetime partnership grounded in a shared passion for flight.
When he’s not guiding international airliners across oceans, John returns to his roots at Pryor Field to unleash raw aerodynamic power. At the controls of his German-engineered Extra 300L—a 300-horsepower, razor-sharp aerobatic thoroughbred—John specializes in advanced upset recovery and spin training. Today, he channels four decades of world-class stick-and-rudder precision into high-energy, edge-of-the-envelope aerobatics that showcase pure aviation excellence
