Practitioners across professional settings note rising encounters with patients and families of diverse religious and spiritual traditions navigating life-limiting illnesses and terminal conditions. Culturally competent practice warrants practitioners holding an understanding of religious and spiritual diverse end-of-life and death-related traditions along with best practices in communication. This engaging, professional development self-study discusses the practices of Jewish, Muslim, Buddhist, and Hindu populations. These populations form the basis of case study analyses focusing on applying the information to patients navigating a terminal condition or recent death experience.

 

Learning Objectives:

1. Distinguish between religion and spirituality.

2. Describe three barriers to the healthy processing of bereavement distinct to religious/spiritually diverse populations.

3. Compare and contrast the death-related beliefs and practices of four religious/spiritually diverse populations in connection with best practice communication strategies.

4. Analyze case studies of religious/spiritually diverse patients navigating the end-of-life and bereavement.
