Glen Collins
Glen Collins stands among the most dominant defensive linemen in Mississippi State football history, remembered for his power, consistency, and impact on one of the nation’s top defenses. A Jackson native and Jim Hill High School product, Collins became a first-team All-American and All-SEC selection while anchoring the Bulldogs from 1977 to 1981. During his standout senior season, he recorded 15 tackles for loss and six sacks, earned first-team All-America honors from both Kodak and The Sporting News, and helped lead Mississippi State to a Hall of Fame Bowl victory. His presence helped define a defense that ranked among the nation’s best, and he played a key role in the Bulldogs’ historic 1980 upset of No. 1 Alabama. Collins finished his collegiate career with 224 total tackles and a then-school record 35 tackles for loss.
Collins’ success at Mississippi State propelled him to the professional ranks, where he was selected in the first round of the 1982 NFL Draft by the Cincinnati Bengals. Over five NFL seasons with the Bengals and later the San Francisco 49ers, he appeared in 58 games and recorded 11 quarterback sacks. His best professional season came in 1983, when he started seven games and posted five sacks. In 1987, Collins joined a 49ers team featuring future Hall of Famers Joe Montana, Steve Young, and Jerry Rice under legendary coach Bill Walsh, further cementing his place among Mississippi’s football greats.
Beyond his playing career, Collins’ legacy has been defined by lasting recognition and continued service to the game. He was inducted into the Mississippi State Athletic Hall of Fame in 2000, named an SEC Football Legend in 2013, and selected to Mississippi State’s All-Century Team in 2014. A dedicated mentor to young athletes, Collins has remained active in his community through youth football camps in Jackson, helping inspire future generations of players. His career, marked by excellence, leadership, and pride in his Mississippi roots, secures his place among the state’s most respected football figures.
