Ronnie Mayers
Ronnie Mayers devoted more than four decades to building excellence in collegiate athletics, establishing himself as one of the most influential figures in Delta State University history. A native of Natchez, Mississippi, Mayers created and led Delta State’s swimming and diving programs, guiding them to sustained championship success while helping elevate the sport across the region. During his coaching tenure, his teams captured multiple conference championships, produced 56 All-Americans, and made 15 NCAA Division II National Championship appearances. A 14-time conference Coach of the Year, Mayers helped organize the New South Intercollegiate Swim Conference, widely regarded as one of the nation’s premier collegiate swimming leagues.
Beyond the pool, Mayers played a transformative role in shaping Delta State athletics. He was instrumental in securing funding and overseeing construction of the university’s aquatics center—now named in his honor—which became one of the premier competition facilities in the country. His leadership extended into administration, where he served in numerous roles including Director of Recreational Facilities, Assistant Athletic Director, and ultimately Athletic Director from 2013 to 2018. During his tenure, he guided major facility improvements across the Delta State campus and strengthened the university’s athletic foundation for future generations.
Mayers’ influence reached far beyond athletics, reflected in decades of service to his university and community. He helped establish youth swimming programs, supported numerous civic and charitable organizations, and contributed to the development of student-athletes both academically and personally. Inducted into the Delta State Athletic Hall of Fame in 2007 and later named Athletic Director Emeritus, Mayers’ legacy is defined by leadership, vision, and a lifelong commitment to excellence. Through his pioneering work in coaching, administration, and community service, Ronnie Mayers leaves an enduring mark on Delta State University and Mississippi athletics.
