  • Archery 101: (Ages 6+)  Learn the fundamentals of archery as you shoot with a bow and arrow and aim for the bullseye!  All equipment provided.  
  • Build a Geocache (All Ages)  Choose from a variety of geocaches and build your very own!
  • Geocaching 101 (All Ages)  Go on a modern day geocache to find hidden treasures around the farm using GPS!
  • Mountain Biking 101: (Ages 7+)  Learn the fundamentals of mountain biking including neutral and ready position, ascending and descending hills, and braking.  Course consists of bike fitting, instruction, and a trail ride.  Bikes and helmets provided.  Participants must be able to ride a 2-wheel bicycle.  Ticket required
  • Nature Photography Hike: (All ages) Learn how to take great photos in nature using the five techniques taught in this class including use of the rule of three, color, framing, diagonal lines, and contrast.  Participants will go on a hike and print off their favorite picture.  Cameras provided.  Ticket required.
  • Night Geocaching (All Ages) Bring your flashlight or headlamp and embark on a nighttime adventure to find hidden caches around the Farm
  • Kayak Rentals: (Ages 10+) Rent a kayak through Kayak Power and get out on the water.  $20 for 20 minutes.  Pay using cash or card at the kayak pond.
  • Open Archery Range (All Ages): Enjoy archery during our open range hours.  Come and go as you please!  All equipment is provided.
  • Open Fishing (All Ages): Borrow a fishing pole from the Totality Store in the Welcome Center for an hour and hopefully reel in the big one!
  • Storytime and Activity: (All Ages) Join the Dallas Librarians for a fun-filled hour of story telling and activities!
  • Field Games: (All Ages) Enjoy some fun in the sun with sack races, horseshoes, egg races, and 3-legged races.

All organized activities require the use of Dallas Park and Recreation equipment unless otherwise specified.  All children under the age of 13 must have an accompanying adult in attendance at all times.

About the Speakers

Alysha Shugart, Rubin Observatory

Alysha Shugart is an Austin, TX native and graduate of the University of Texas at Austin.  She graduated with degrees in astronomy, physics, and pure mathematics from UT.  She is currently serving as the deputy nighttime operations manager at the Rubin Observatory, which is under construction near La Serena, Chile.  The Rubin Observatory expects to have engineering first light on their telescope during the fall of 2024 and fully transition into operations during 2025.  Alysha works to help implement nighttime operation practices.  She also works with a team of astronomers and engineers to verify the technical capabilities of the new telescope.  She has worked at 6 different observatories in the US and in Chile.

Bei Chen, University of North Texas

Bei Chen has a Bachelor's degree in French, a Master's degree in French and Chinese Translation Theory from Bejing International Studies University, and a Masters Degree in French Literature from University of North Texas.  In addition to her studies in the fields of both Chinese and French, she has 10 years of teaching experience as a teaching assistant and full-time lecturer in China as well as America.  She worked as full-time faculty for a year at China Communication University, then moved to the United States and has been teaching French and Chinese at World Languages, Literatures and Cultures Department of University of North Texas for 15 years.  While working at UNT, she has been serving as Chinese program coordinator and established the Chinese minor program.  The faculty-led Study Abroad Program as also set up in 2010 and she has led students twice to Beijing and Xi'an during the summer of 2010 and 2011.

Chris Morris, Dallas Park and Recreation

Chris Morris earned a Bachelor's Degree in Zoology from Texas A&M in 2008.  He worked with the Dallas Zoo from 2009-2011, first as a Pool Mechanic and then as an Animal Cleaner.  In 2011, Chris worked for 6 months with the Banfield Pet Hospital as a Veterinary Technician.  From there, he moved to the City of Dallas, advancing from Environmental Coordinator to Climate Coordinator to Urban Biolgist.

Laura Lillycrop, Dallas Zoo

With a B.S. in Biology from North Carolina State University earned in 2015, Laura Lillycrop is a Senior Zoologist from the Dallas Zoo and has been there since 2022.  She is also a Bird & Mammal Zoologist with the Dallas World Aquarium, serving there since 2020.  Before that, she was the Lead African Penguin Zoologist at the Tanganyika Wildlife Park in Goddard, Kansas in 2018.

Marcus Cole, Trinity River Audubon

Marcus Cole earned a Bachelor's of Appiled Arts and Sciences from the University of North Texas at Dallas in 2019.  He has worked with the Trinity River Audubon Center as a presenter and educator since 2016.  In his spare time, he volunteers with other nature-related organizations such as the Texas Discovery Gardens.

Monica Morrison, Texas Native Cats

Monica Morrison got her start with wildlife more than 20 years ago at the Dallas Zoo as a volunteer and tiger docent.  Since that time, she has voluteered in various capacities at two Dallas-area big cat rescue centers.  She participated in an ocelot study in Mexico and another in Kenya on African lions.   She has also worked with organizations in South American on jaguar and other big cat projects.  In 2017, she founded Texas Native Cats, a 501 (c)(3) that provides education, outreach, and advocacy for Texas' five species of wild cats, past and present.  Two years ago, she turned her attention to the Texas mountain lion and works with other like-minded individuals to advocate for a change in regulations for our apex predator.  Texas Native Cats' overriding goal is to educate Texans about the diversity of our wild felines, the benefits they provide us, and the threats they endure.  Ms. Morrison lives in Dallas.

Riley Simpson, Dallas Park and Recreation

Riley Simpson earned a double Bachelor's of Science in Wildlife Fisheries Sciences and Recreation, Park, and Tour Sciences in 2020.  In 2021, she worked for the US National Park Service in Bullfrog Marina, Utah as an Aquatic Invasive Species Park Ranger.  From there, she joined the City of Dallas Park & Recreation Department as a Community Program Coordinator.  In 2022, she took the position of Environmental Coordinator where she ahs been to this day.

 

Outdoor Activities

There are many outdoor activities you can enjoy on your own at Samuell Farm!  Fishing, hiking, wildflower viewing, and mountain biking are just a few of the activitites you can enjoy at Samuell Farm.  The park features over 400 acres filled with woods, ponds, streams, and natural beauty.  The Texas State Flower, bluebonnets, will be in season!  For self-directed activities, please bring your own equipment. 

All persons age 17+ are required to have a valid fishing license.  Fishing License Requirements
