Steve Freeman

Steve Freeman’s legacy in football spans over five decades, marked by excellence as both a player and official. Born in Lamesa, Texas, and raised in Memphis, Tennessee, Freeman starred as a free safety at Mississippi State from 1972 to 1975, where he also lettered in track. A team captain in his senior season, Freeman led the Bulldogs to a Sun Bowl victory and finished his college career with nine interceptions. His impact on the program was honored in 2000 with induction into the Mississippi State Athletic Hall of Fame.

Drafted in 1975, Freeman went on to enjoy a remarkable 13-year NFL career, primarily with the Buffalo Bills. Renowned for his durability and leadership, he played in 190 games, including a franchise-record 169 consecutive appearances for the Bills. A defensive stalwart, he led the team in tackles multiple seasons and posted 23 interceptions, returning three for touchdowns. Freeman was a team captain from 1980 to 1986, was named First Team All-NFL by The Sporting News in 1983, and was honored as one of the 40 Greatest Bills and a member of the franchise’s Silver Anniversary Team. He concluded his playing career with the Minnesota Vikings, helping the team reach the 1987 NFC Championship Game.

Following retirement, Freeman transitioned into officiating, where he has achieved similar distinction. He began in the SEC, where he worked high-profile games including the 2000 Sugar Bowl National Championship. He later moved to NFL Europe and then to the NFL, where he has officiated more than a dozen playoff games, two NFC Championship games, and Super Bowl XLVIII.

Respected across every level of the game, Steve Freeman is a rare figure whose influence has shaped football from the field to the officiating booth—embodying excellence, integrity, and commitment to the sport.
